Happy Saint Paddy's Day

Top of the morn'in to you.

Well today is the day they celebrate Saint Patrick's Day.
I guess you can say it has mutated to a bit more commercial then it used to be.

Since I'm not catholic and the whole saints thing is beyond me I really don't understand much of the reasoning.  I think in today's world it is more about celebrating Ireland and it culture then anything else.  There is the whole wear'in of the green (which I do not support), eating what is assumed to be traditional Irish fare (corn beef and cabbage which appears to be not be so traditional).

Why not be proud of your heritage every day of the week.  You can leave the getting drunk down at the local pub part out though beer and drinking tunes are some of the best song around.
They are plain classic in my opinion.  That and some of the rebel songs from folks like Wolfetones and the Clancy Brothers.

For the more ethereal modernized and haunting music I do like a good piece by Enya or her relatives in Clannad (which seems to be defunct these days).
Mairé Brennanhas some solo albums worth listening to.  David Arkenstone has also done a few things in this Celtic Genre of music.  And there is even a interesting band by the name of Finn MacCool. Though some of the stuff they sing about deals with Scotland.  Works fine for us Scotch-Irish folks.

Now who can leave out what could be considered the all time best Irish song to ever exist?         That would be Danny Boy.   This is one song I want played at my funeral, it just brings out raw emotion kind of like the song Kilkelly sung by Mick Moloney/Robbie O'Connell/Jimmy Keane.
I found purely by chance one day while trolling around Youtube a great version that is a bit more modern and edgy by a band called Tir na n'Og  out of Serbia.  Their English is great and the style of the music video is wonderful as well with the split shot of the band.   Take a look at it here

And if you want to do some real research as to where or who your relatives and ancestors are/were I'd recommend going over to one of the best free databases out there - Familysearch.org
