More updates on the Trebuchet

Well we are down to the wire with the need to have the Trebuchet done.  It has to be ready for the big Boy Scout event called "Scout-O-Rama".
So it all started out with the best of intentions and the conversion of the documentation for the plastic PVC pipe version.

Not so easy.  First of all I figured out the angles were not all 45º and 90º.
Also the plastic version has certain flex in the parts that can not be had in the wooden version.

See the page for documentation on both version - Cub Scout Version - Plastic Pipe and Boy Scout Version - Wood

I had to whip out my knowledge of Triangles, and geometric theory.

In the end we winged some of it and made some changes.  Like for example the support arms.  Originally they were mounting on the outside of the base.  Now they are on the inside. Also we decided to include a secondary support to the uprights to improve stability.

And one huge thing I learned - 2x4  Stud Lumber is not really 2 X 4.  It is more like 1 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches.  This makes a big difference in the end on angles, measurements and the like.
Also I got a lesson in carriage bolts compared to hex bolts.  Advantages to both.  Each has it place in the final design.

And sizes.  It is interesting to see what size drill bits are available and sizes for pipe, brackets and the other supplies.  Stay tune for updates on what works.

I now have a renewed sense of respect for those fine fellows that built "Warwolf" for my ancestor Edward "Longshanks" King of England.  The may have been a brute but he sure knew how to get the right guys on the job.  They were more talented, wise and schooled then we know.  Do view the video from nova on the subject to see why.

and buy the video if you have the money.
